一天夜晚他借着身旁的煤油灯的微光洗衣服，不小心把旁边的煤油灯打翻了。把那昂贵的礼服弄脏了，女主人知道后非常生气，扣掉了这个农民两个月的工钱。

从此这个农民把这件衣服挂在窗户上，每天起床以后看它一眼才开始新一天的工作，以示工作不要马虎。二周之后的一天，他起床以后照常看了衣服一眼，但他发现被煤油弄脏的污点奇迹般的消失了。
