初唐四杰指的是王勃、骆宾王、杨炯、卢照邻这四个人，他们都是初唐中后期很有才华的诗文作家，四人才名早享，在青少年时代就获得“四杰”的美誉。

在唐诗史上，他们是勇于改革齐梁浮艳诗风的先驱。唐太宗喜欢宫体诗，写的诗也多为风花雪月之作，有很明显的齐梁宫体诗的痕迹。大臣上官仪也秉承陈隋的遗风，其作风靡一时，士大夫们争相效法，世号“上官体”。

在齐梁的形式主义诗风仍在诗坛占有统治地位的时候，“四杰”挺身而出，王勃首先起来反对初唐诗坛出现的这种不正之风，接着其余三人也都起来响应，一起投入了反对“上官体”的创作活动之中。

他们力图冲破齐梁遗风和“上官体”的牢笼，把诗歌从狭隘的宫廷转到了广大的市井，从狭窄的台阁移向了广阔的江山和边塞，开拓了诗歌的题材，丰富了诗歌的内容，赋予了诗歌新的生命力，提高了当时诗歌的思想意义，展现了带有新气息诗风，推动初唐诗歌向着健康的道路发展。四杰对唐诗发展所作出的贡献大致说来主要表现在以下两个方面：

其次，初唐四杰为五言律诗奠定了基础，并且使七言古诗发展成熟。五言律在“四杰”之前已有出现，唐初诗人王绩（王勃系王绩侄孙）曾作过一些努力，但作品不多。到了“四杰”的时候，五律这一形式才得到充分的发挥，并在他们的作品中被逐渐的固定下来。“四杰”以多数量、高质量的诗篇为稍后于他们的沈佺期、宋之问的律诗打下了良好的基础。
